Barn dancing, ceilidh, country dancing, folk dancing – whatever you call it they are fundamentally the same thing. Highly social dances based on traditional dance steps, led by a caller. Wivey Folk Dancing has been running for over 30 years, and the emphasis is on enjoying the dancing and having fun. Some have been coming since the very early days, but others have joined over the years, with new faces of all ages turning up all the time, and being made welcome.
There is usually live music, typically traditional tunes, sometimes modern ones, all with a lively rhythm making it easy to dance to. And the dances are constantly evolving with new ones being devised all the time using the endless possible combinations of the same basic steps.
The callers are all highly experienced and help new dancers to pick up the steps, and often start with simple dances and build the complexity through the evening. Everyone gets it wrong sometimes, that is part of the fun, and people help one-another out.
Folk dancing provides good healthy exercise, but isn’t too demanding. Some do all the dances, others choose to sit some out and just enjoy the music and the spectacle of groups of people producing flowing dance patterns.
Dancing starts 4th Tuesday in September, then every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month until May.
8.00-10.30pm, with a break for tea/coffee and biscuits.
Venue, Wiveliscombe Community Centre, TA4 2JP.

We look forward to welcoming our regulars and anyone who would like to join us for an enjoyable evening of dancing to live music with experienced callers. There is always a good range of dances. No experience or partner needed – there’s usually someone to dance with.
