A Recreation Ground provided by public subscription for the inhabitants of Wiveliscombe, as a memorial to those who gave their lives in the 1914/1918 war, opened June 1920. Owned by Trustees and run by a Voluntary Management Committee. The Oblisk built by William White and dedicated 3rd June 1920.

On the 3rd June 1920 the War Memorial Recreation Ground was opened, in Memory of the Men of Wiveliscombe who fell in World War 1 1914 - 1918.
To remember this, on the 3rd June 2020 the Pavilion was adorned with flags alongside 2 soldier silhouettes and 2 poppies. The names and ages of each of the 55 Wivey Boys are embroidered on a flag. Reading from left to right - the first to the last casualty. The youngest known casualty was Frank Vallance aged 19 and 3 months. The oldest known casualty was William Gamlin aged 44. The average age of Wivey casualties was 27 although only 17 were aged 30+.Therefore 38 casualties were aged between 19 and 29.
The railings were decorated with various items of crochet, knitting and fabric.Flowers - due to the fields original name of Broad Meadow, the Pool - some interesting swimmers and spectators, some Rugby Players, a cricketer, scones and tea, picnic, a tribute to our NHS, a bonfire and other items.
